Mobile Users Are Ready for M-Payments, Ubuntu Desktop on Mobile and More

February 23, 2012

Mobile Users Are Ready for M-Payments
If the brouhaha over Jonathan's Card didn't convince you, a recent report by Nielsen found that most smartphone users are comfortable using their phones to make purchases. This is especially true for iPhone users

Even without m-Payments, mobile is heavily influencing the shopping experience.

  • Nielsen found that 38 percent of respondents used mobile to compare items while in stores.
  • 32 percent said they used mobile to read reviews of products before buying them.
  • Pew Research Center found that half of cell phone owners used their phone for shopping related activities over the holidays.

Ubuntu Desktop to Piggyback on Android Phones
Canonical, the company behind the most popular Linux desktop operating system, recently announced a new offering that puts Ubuntu on quad-core Android phones. This doesn't replace the phone's OS. The phone runs Android, unless it's docked. The Ubuntu desktop side of the phone can access the user's contacts, data service and even make calls, while offering a completely non-mobile experience. One device, two experiences. What's your definition of mobile now?

Sony Begins Mobile Rebrand
Sony Ericsson's partnership has gone the way of the dodo and the newly minted Sony Mobile is introducing itself to the world by redirecting the Sony Ericcson portal to sonymobile.com. Their new site is announcing the first Sony Mobile Smartphone, the Xperia Ion. Expect more changes and announcements from the company, especially at next week's Mobile World Congress.

New Update Brings Collaboration to Google Docs App

Google has pushed out an update for its Google Docs app. The biggest new feature is the ability for live collaborative updating. Now, you can use Google Docs on your smartphone just like you do on your desktop. The update also includes multiple tweaks to assist with editing, including pinch-to-zoom and some formatting changes. Check out the release on Google's blog here.
